59201 Somerton 150300 JC071

EWS's Class 59/2 59201 climbs away from Somerton with the empties of a Stone (boulder) working from the Mendips to Doniford on the West Somerset Railway in conjunction with sea defence work. The 6 59/2's were purchased by National Power for use on the Ferrybridge Power Station traffic in 1994, but on 1/4/98 they were sold on to EWS and initially based at Hither Green to work alongside Mendip Rail's 59's on aggregate traffic, at a later date it was arranged that the 59/2's would be maintained at the Mendip Rail depot near Cranmore, and their employment on work out of the Mendip Quarries became commonplace, 15/3/00. ©John Chalcraft/www.railphotoprints.co.uk
