It's 23/11/83 and Class 50 50041 'Bulwark' lies on its side at the entrance to Paddington. The loco and its train (the 21.35 Penzance - Paddington Sleeper service) derailed on the crossovers to the west of the terminus with the loco which detached from the train slid for some 400 yards eventually ending up on its side on the tracks of Platform 8 under the Bishops Road Bridge. Of the carriages 12 were derailed completely , the 13th had one axle derailed and the last (14th) vehicle remained on the track. Despite the severity of the crash only 3 people had injuries which necessitated hospital treatment. the official inquiry found that the cause of the accident was the excessive speed of the loco/train (reported to be 60 - 70 mph) as it negotiated the crossovers where a 25mph speed limit should have been adhered to. Surprisingly the loco was recovered and repaired at Doncaster Works. ©Dave Moulden/Rail Photoprints
