50011 Gloucester 140779 GE011
Class 50 50011 powers away from Gloucester heading a service for the West Country on 14th July 1979. The basher with his cassette recorder and microphone positioned out of the leading coach is clearly having a productive and no doubt memorable experience. This was the last class 50 to remain un-named at the time and was just days away from its naming as 'Centurion'. 50011 was the first member of the class to be withdrawn from service, in February 1987, and its nameplates were later transferred to 50040, which was previously named 'Leviathan'. As for 50011, it was was sent to BREL Crewe to act as a static engine test bed for overhauled power units. The locomotive had experienced less than four years of active service after its refurbishment and was eventually cut up at the works in September 1992 by Texas Metals. ©www.railphotoprints.co.uk - Gordon Edgar
