6028 Patchway 170362 HB602

The up 'Red Dragon' , 7.15am Carmarthen - Paddington climbs away from Patchway Tunnel and approaches the sdtationhauled by King Class 4-6-0 6028 'King George VI'. Until the early 1960's the 'Kings' were something of a rarity in South Wales but the early dieselisation of Laira meant that they became more common and 3 members of the Class were allocated to Cardiff Canton in 10/60 and the 81A locos soon became a regular sight west of the Severn until their untimely demise at the end of 1962. ©Hugh Ballantyne/Rail Photoprints
