Class 74 Electro-diesel 74009 on the 'scrap line' at Eastleigh TMD in Spring 1978. Originally built at Doncaster Works in March 1960 as E5017 (later class 71), it was rebuilt at Crewe Works and emerged in May 1968 as E6109. The ten members of the class were rebuilt for the Bournemouth Line electrification scheme for use on both passenger and freight services, especially those operating to and from Southampton Docks, having the ability to operate where third rail was not available. Withdrawn from service in December 1977, 74009 was consigned for scrap at Birds Ltd. Long Marston in October 1978. ©Gordon Edgar Collection/Rail Photoprints
