Class 73/1 'Electro-diesel' 73120 with two ex-Southern Region parcels vans (S252 and S263), possibly for transfer to the down sidings at New Cross Gate, at London Bridge terminus on 30 April 1985.br/London Bridge Station in Tooley Street, south of the river Thames, is the oldest of the London railway termini, and has had a most complex history involving frequent rebuilding and changes of ownership. It was not however the earliest station in the present London metropolitan area as the London and Greenwich Railway stations at Spa Road (Bermondsey) and Deptford opened on 8 February 1836. Although new awnings were added over the former S.E.R. platforms during the major BR rebuild in the 1970s, the arched Brighton roof of the terminus was retained. It has been described as quot;one of the best modern station reconstructions in Britainquot;. The terminal platforms, 8-16, are on the south side of the station and are mostly served by Southern services to south London and the south coast. The fine arched overall roof was demolished in the recent station redevelopment. ©Gordon Edgar/Rail Photoprints
