W14W-Stourbridge-Town-1957 GE14R
Great Western 'Flying Banana' Railcar W14W in "blood and custard" livery at Stourbridge Town station in 1957. It was working a shuttle service over the short 1,600 yards long branch from Stourbridge Junction. A steam auto railcar had worked the branch until the previous year. The railcar, powered by two A.E.C. bus engines had a 70 seat capacity and was not equipped with conventional buffers and drawgear and was unable to work with a strengthening coach. Two of these railcars normally operated the complete off-peak Snow Hill to Dudley shuttles throughout the day and augmented by steam in the rush hour, as well as operating the shuttle on the short distance service between Old Hill and Dudley. W14W railcar was withdrawn from service in August 1960. ©Gordon Edgar Collection/Rail Photoprints
