A classic autumnal afternoon was enjoyed by the passengers of the 'Scottish Lowlander' railtour as it journeyed the equally classic Glasgow South Western route back via Dumfries to Carlisle, where 'Coronation' class Pacific 46233 'Duchess of Sutherland' took over to Crewe. The 'Gresley' Pacific is on the final assault of the 1 in 200 climb up to Enterkinfoot tunnel. Until 1923 the line via Dumfries was in competition with the North British Railway and Caledonian Railway as one of the main lines into Scotland.
