56031-Hatfield-210999-GE031
'Dutch' liveried 56031 heading a Goole-Doncaster 'Enterprise' service comprising ISO container wagons and two 'pig pen' sliding hood steel coil wagons passing Stainforth and Hatfield on 21 September 1999. The leading unladen 'FAA' swan-neck container wagon, just built at Thrall York works at this time, has a massive tare weight of 33.5 tonnes, but offers high cube (9'6" high ISO containers) gauge capability over the routes serving the East Coast Ports. 56031 was the first of the BREL Doncaster-built class 56s and was introduced into service in May 1977. It was named Merehead in September 1983, but by the time of this photo had lost its nameplates. A number of class 56s were hired for use in France and Spain for working on construction and maintenance trains through the hiring company Fertis, and 56031 was one of those. It was repatriated to the UK, but met its fate in January 2013 at EMR Kingsbury. ©www.railphotoprints.co.uk - Gordon Edgar
