6170 Crewe 1946 RPC781

6170 Crewe 1946 RPC781

The unique Royal Scot 4-6-0 6170 'British Legion', 6170 was rebuilt from the High Pressure Compund locomotive 'Fury' in 1935 using a Type 2 taper boiler, the rebuild taking place well in advance of the rebuilding of the other 'Scots'. The later Scot rebuilds were undertaken using 2A boilers which were 15 inches inches shorter than the No 2 boiler, and the resulting boiler overhang can be clearly seen in this pre smoke deflector photograph taken at Crewe in 1946, also note the massive steam pipe and the top feed which was positioned further back on the Type 2 boiler. This was the only 'Scot' to be fitted with the type 2 boiler and the boiler was incompatible with the 2A so its maintenance could not be speeded up by undertaking boiler swaps, despite the maintenance problems the loco remained in traffic until 12/62, it was scrapped at Crewe in Januaery 1963. ©www.railphotoprints.co.uk - collection
