Development of the 31/0 by Brush Traction, Loughborough with a 1365HP Mirrlees JVS12T Engine and Brush Traction Motors, later re-engined using an English Electric 12SVT engine of 1470HP. Some later fitted with ETH and renumbered 31/4. 227 locos built, most withdrawn by 2000 but a number preserved and some in regular use with Network Rail on their test trains.
