70043 Crewe Works 100553 NS1160
It's 10/5/53 and Britannia Pacific 70043 has just been rolled out of Crewe Works, but the normally handsome lines have been spoilt by the addition of large Westinghouse Pumps either side of the smokebox, to make matters worse the addition of the pumps meant that there was no room for smoke deflectors. Two locomotives 70043 and 70044 were put to service in this form and were based on Longsight from 4/6/53. Despite the Longsight allocation both of the locos were tested on air braked coal traffic on the Midland Main Line between Toton and Brent. After test completion both locomotives retained the Westinghouse equipment until 1957 when it was removed and the locos emerged from Crewe Works overhaul fitted with smoke deflectors and named 2/57. ©Neville Simms/Ranwell Collection/Rail Photoprints
