20 Locomotives produced under the British Railways Modernisation Plan by Brush Traction, Loughborough with a 1250HP Mirrlees JVS12T Engine and Brush Traction Motors, later re-engined using an English Electric 12SVT engine of 1470HP. All withdrawn by 1980 but several used for train heating. D5500 (31018) preserved by the NRM.
