Its that wet Saturday at Newport again, 7th March 1981. A day return ticket from Gloucester, the same day the 'Blavk 5' No.5000 was working the Welsh Marches Express. By early afternoon I ventured into the rain to take up position at the multi-story car park overlooking the Usk river bridge, a fine vantage point. Just before leaving the station I captured the 10:00 Crewe to Cardiff depositing its passengers onto a sodden platform, the rain still falling as if there was no tomorrow. Happy days! By this time 25042 was one of the older calass 25's still in service, being delivered from BR Derby in May 1963 as D5192 to Toton TMD, and was a regular performer at this time on the Welsh Marches route, being one of the small number of class 25’s fitted with a Stone Vapour L4610 steam heating boiler for use on secondary passenger workings. With its operational steam heating boiler it could however be found on passenger duties as farwidespread as Cardiff, Norwich, Skegness, Leeds, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Stranraer. In August 1985 25042 lost the ability to heat trains when its steam heating boiler was isolated and its final few months were largely spent on freight duties. By May 1986 25042 was the last remaining vacuum braked class 25 in service, however it was deemed to be surplus to requirements and was withdrawn at Crewe in full working order. On the 16th July 1987 25042 was towed along with 25058, 25285 and 25910 from Crewe to Vic Berry's scrapyard at Leicester and was duly broken up during October 1987.
