Crosti boiler-fitted '9F' class 2-10-0 92026 of Wellingborough (15A) depot at Cricklewood (14A) in 1959 with rods removed, possibly prior to being despatched for works attention. Ten members of the '9F' class (92020-29) were constructed at Crewe works during 1955, the 'Crosti' modification being an effort to increase efficiency by using the waste boiler gases to pre-heat the feed water. The experiment was deemed a failure, the locos requiring increased maintenance and also being extremely unpopular with locomotive crews due to the extreme heat in the cab. They were all converted to the conventional arrangement, but retained the unique shaped smokebox with no smoke deflectors. ©Gordon Edgar Collection/Rail Photoprints
