Having just taken on water from the hydrant on the left, Class 55 'Deltic' No.55004 ' Queen's Own Highlander' prepares to depart from York heading the 22:30 King's Cross to Edinburgh service on 26th July 1980. As platform 14 vibrated with the twin Napier Deltic engines adding their melody to the still of the night, I had this spectacle to myself, no other photographers around in the wee small hours; another 'over-nighter' and a most enjoyable experience. I am so pleased that I made the effort here on two occasions. 55004 was to remain in service for just over another year, being withdrawn in November, and finally cut up at Doncaster Works in August 1983. ©www.railphotoprints.co.uk - Gordon Edgar
