15001_Stoke_5D _May 1966 Gordon-Edgar-collection
A rare colour shot of ex-LNER 350hp shunter No.15001 (LNER 8001) inside the former North Staffordshire Railway roundhouse at Stoke in May 1966. Built at LNER Doncaster works in August 1944, this shunter ended its days on the LMR around Stoke and Crewe, being withdrawn in April 1967 and disposed of by J. Cashmore,at Great Bridge.
The North Staffordshire Railway built its works in the grounds of an 18th-century house c1852 and the basement incorporated the tinsmith's shops and iron store. The building, its construction on a scale rivalling that of Camden roundhouse, remained derelict into the 1970s, seemingly unrecognised in significance outside the local area.
